MU Varna employs some of the best teaching methods available. Outside of the classroom, students make use of Blackboard and intranet, which are accessible on both desktop computers and mobile devices, while during classes 3D technology is often used to enhance and visualise the teaching material. For instance, in anatomy classes, students are taught via holograms and 3D visualisations, while also physically exploring the structure of the different body parts with 3D scanned and 3D printed objects. Apps are also broadly available for use, and provide students with the
opportunity to learn through real-world cases. One such example is the remote microscopy application, which allows students to examine microscope samples stored off-campus in high definition.
In addition, the main training centre of the school – University Hospital St. Marina – is equipped with some of the best technical instruments modern medicine has to offer. Among them are the robotic system for personalised clinical dosing (cytostation) and the full-body hi-definition osteometer.
Medical Unversity – Varna was founded in 1960 under the name “Higher Medical Institute”. At the time, it was only the third medical school in the country. In 1995 the university patron became the legendary Bulgarian physician and statesman Paraskev Stoyanov, widely considered to be the forefather of modern surgery in the country. In 2006, degrees awarded by MU Varna received European accreditation, allowing graduates to work freely and proudly in all
member states of the EU.
In the years after this crucial milestone, MU Varna became even more focused on the quality of its education, culminating in another important event – the recognition for best medical school in Bulgaria by the internationally-acclaimed academic contribution watcher Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Varna is the third largest population centre in Bulgaria and the biggest city in the east of the country. The city is a famous tourist, cultural, commercial and academic hotspot with century-old traditions. Renowned for its open-air summer theatre, its breathtakingly decorated 850,000 sq. m. city garden and the grandiose orthodox cathedral The Dormition of the Mother of God, Varna is often colloquially called “the sea capital of Bulgaria”. The calm narrow streets lining behind the international seaport are in stark, but inspiring contrast with the large boulevards, where hundreds of small businesses continue the entrepreneurial spirit of Varna’s age-old history.
Varna is home to the oldest gold treasure in the world, dated back to the dawn of the Bronze Age, about 6500 years ago. The city is also famous for one of the most historically important battles of the Middle Ages – the battle of Varna in 1444, where the Polish king Władysław III led an unsuccessful campaign to repel the Ottoman expansion into Eastern and Central Europe. But despite its rich history, Varna is above all a city of the youth. There are numerous youth events and initiatives held every year, countless opportunities for sports and recreation, a vibrant night life, as well as sprawling beaches as far as the eye can see. During the summer, they become a place where new friendships are born and memories that last a lifetime are made. A city of thousand years that looks confidently towards the future, Varna is everything that a young student can ever wish for.
Medical University – Varna is famed not only for its exceptional graduates, but also for its superb sports achievements. Following through with the motto “Strong mind in a strong body”, the university undertakes several initiatives to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle, full of physical activity.
MU Varna is the first education institution in Europe to promote the game woodball domestically and internationally. The university also has official teams competing in several sports events, such as The Provost Cup, Summer University, Winter Universiade and the Universiade of Varna. Those events are held internally and against other local and national university teams in various disciplines, including volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, handball, sailing, swimming, chess and folklore dancing.
Medical University – Varna runs its own television programme. Students are able to work on their video production and editing skills as a side activity besides their main medical studies. Most of the content created at the TV studios is related to university news and events, which not only helps students to acquire new useful skills, but also keep up with life on campus. This is the only university TV programme available in Bulgaria and is a project run entirely in-house by MU Varna. It is a great way to meet new friends, get involved with academic and extracurricular activities, as well as learn useful skills in line with the digital world.
